Contact Lenses After 40: What Your Options Look Like for Near and Distance Vision

You’ve worn contacts for twenty years without a second thought. Then one evening you’re at a restaurant, holding the menu at the end of your arm and tilting it toward the candle. Your distance vision is fine. It’s everything within a couple of feet that has gone soft.

This is common, and it doesn’t mean the end of contact lenses. It does mean the setup that worked at thirty-five may need changing. Here are the main routes, how they differ, and what to ask at your next appointment.

What Changes Around Forty

The lens inside your eye slowly loses flexibility. It used to reshape itself quickly to focus on a phone or a page, and now it does that job less well. The condition is called presbyopia. It isn’t a disease, it isn’t caused by screens, and it happens to nearly everyone, usually becoming noticeable somewhere in the early to mid-forties.

The practical effect is that single-vision contacts, which correct for one distance only, no longer cover your whole day. Something has to give, and there are a few ways to handle it.

The Main Options

Reading glasses over your contacts

This is the simplest fix. You keep your distance lenses and add cheap readers when you need them. The downside is that you’ll hunt for them constantly, and they’re awkward for things like cooking or checking a phone mid-conversation.

Monovision

One eye is corrected for distance and the other for near. Your brain learns to favour whichever eye suits the task. Many people adapt well and like not having to think about it. Others find it unsettling, and depth perception can be affected, which matters for night driving or sport. Practitioners often let you try it for a while before you commit.

Multifocal lenses

Both eyes wear a lens with different power zones, so near, middle, and far vision are covered together. For many wearers this gives the most natural feel. You’ll also hear these called varifocal contact lenses, borrowing the term from glasses. The trade-off is that your brain has to learn to pick the right image, so there’s an adjustment period, and some people notice slightly softer detail or glare around lights at night.

None of these is the correct answer for everyone. Your work, your hobbies, how much you drive after dark, and how fussy you are about crisp vision all push the decision one way or another to Expect at a Fitting.

Daily or Longer-Wear?

Multifocals come as dailies and as two-week or monthly lenses. Dailies cost more per lens, but there’s no case to look after and nothing to clean, and a fresh lens each morning can be easier on dry or sensitive eyes. That matters more after forty, since dryness tends to creep up with age.

Acuvue Oasys 1 Day is a silicone hydrogel daily from Johnson & Johnson Vision, designed with long-day comfort in mind. Whether a multifocal version is available depends on your country and changes over time, so check with your practitioner rather than assuming. Other manufacturers make multifocal dailies too, so it’s one option among several.

A multifocal or monovision fitting takes longer than a standard one. Your practitioner measures your distance prescription and your reading addition, then works out which eye should do what. They’ll also ask about your routine, so it helps to arrive with answers:

  1. How long you spend on screens, and how far away they sit.
  2. Whether you drive at night.
  3. Any close-up hobbies, such as sewing, model-making, or reading sheet music.
  4. Whether your eyes feel dry, itchy, or tired by evening.

Don’t be surprised if you leave with trial lenses and a follow-up booked. A tweak to the power or a different design is a normal part of the process, and it rarely works perfectly on the first try.

Ordering Online Once You’re Settled

When the fitting is sorted, you can reorder online as long as the details match your prescription exactly. Multifocal prescriptions carry extra numbers, including the add power, so compare each one with what you were given. Reputable sellers ask for your prescription or verify it with your practitioner, which is a good sign and not an obstacle. Don’t switch to a similar-looking lens without checking first, because multifocal designs vary a lot and a substitute can feel quite different.

Making the Adjustment Easier

Wear new lenses at home for the first few days. Look between your phone and a distant wall, and read something in dim light, which is where multifocals are most demanding. Keep your old glasses nearby, and test night driving somewhere quiet before relying on it. Follow your practitioner’s guidance on wearing time, and book the follow-up even if things feel fine.

Mistakes to Avoid

Giving up after a day is the usual one. The first hours are the least representative, and many people settle in within a week or two. The reverse also happens: tolerating blurry or tiring vision for weeks when a refit would solve it. If it still feels wrong after a fair trial, say so.

Buying cheaper lenses that look identical on paper is another trap. Others skip annual eye exams, even though your prescription can shift quickly in your forties and the exam checks corneal health too. And as with any lens, pain, lasting redness, or sudden blurry vision means taking them out and calling your eye care professional.

FAQs

Do I have to give up contact lenses because of presbyopia?

No. Multifocals, monovision, or readers over distance lenses all let you keep wearing contacts.

Which is better, monovision or multifocal?

Neither wins outright. Multifocals feel more natural to many people, while monovision suits others who dislike the zoned effect. A trial tells you more than any comparison.

Will I still need reading glasses with multifocals?

Sometimes, for very small print or poor light. Plenty of wearers rarely reach for them.

Can I get multifocals if I have astigmatism?

Often, yes. Some designs combine both corrections, though the range is narrower, so ask at your fitting.

Is Acuvue Oasys 1-Day available as a multifocal?

It depends on your region and the product line. Your eye care professional can tell you what’s available for your prescription.

How long does it take to get used to multifocals?

Usually a few days, occasionally a couple of weeks. If it isn’t improving, ask about a different design.

Wrapping Up

Turning forty doesn’t have to mean retiring your contacts. It means choosing between a few sensible ways to see up close, and being honest about which one fits your life. Go to the fitting with specifics, give each option a fair trial, and go back if something feels wrong. Most people end up with a setup they stop thinking about.
